Work Hard, Play Hard: T-Shirt & Donation
$100.00 USD
First off, thank you for being here folks. The fact that you are here means you are one of us. Someone who likes to support friends, get out and about, put in the work, and let loose. Whether you are here because you want to support me, here to support the donation and cause, or here because you just want a rad shirt, it all counts and I appreciate you.
Yes these are very limited in quantity and sizing because well I didn't know how many people would contribute and I didn't want a closet full of my own shirts. What you see here is what is left. I am sorry if you missed your size. We can weigh the demand and print more if it warrants. We will visit that shortly via a poll for quantities and sizing.
Now to answer some questions...
What you are looking to spend 100 of your hard earned dollars on... is a limited run of the first ever batch of the "Work Hard, Play Hard" shirts from me, Gregg Boydston. Along with the shirt... you'll get your hands on a silly sticker pack themed after my crazy self, a one-off 4x6" photo print of my photo work printed off my snazzy printer, and a fun hand written note on the back of the print – both in which will be geared towards you as an individual to the best of my knowledge. Trucks, fire, camping, Baja? I don't know, I'll figure it out in the moment.
Work Hard, Play Hard is something I think kind of stemmed from my childhood but really sank in on the time I spent on a hotshot crew. We were away from home, grinding through long hours, sleeping on the ground, sweating, bleeding, and going non-stop and when we did get a break; we got after it. It is also something I saw in my upbringing within my family. Whether it was pouring cement in the shadows of my dad and grandpa, house projects, moving family around, fences, brick, roofing, or even dropping my dad off at the airport weekly to go put in the work up north. Everyone just always hustled and I saw it first hand, but then got together and had a good time over a birthday party or BBQ or whatever the gathering was for. It just is something I have always been around and I choose not to be around people who don't fall from the same tree. Just earning your right to a good time through hard work and hustle. Being able to sit back and enjoy a cold beer during some slower times and be proud of what you've done to get to that slow down – and being able to know you got there with some blood sweat and tears. That's all, it's simple right?
After all this hard work talk, why would you want to spend your hard earned coin on this silly shirt you question?
I first wanted to create some artwork to showcase the lifestyle I'm living and it didn't take long for the requests for stickers and shirts to start flowing in. So here we are. Now, I didn't want to just sell any old t-shirt. That just felt wrong and dorky. I ain't doing this to take y'all's money. Im doing this to give it to someone else. So I brainstormed, thought, looked, asked, and came to a conclusion I wanted to sell the shirt side by side with a donation that felt right at the time. I will almost break even and give the remainder away. So with my background and current career, I felt it appropriate to support something that I also work so hard at. After all I am pushing the play hard mentality but not until you've worked hard to deserve it. So with a purchase of a t-shirt you will also donate some money to a good cause and receive a little goody pack from me.
Where is the money being donated you wonder?
Well with the first wave of shirts for sure going to some sort of wildland fire community... I was in the middle of receiving shirts, figuring out who and where, and was in talks with a couple different agencies and pals I have worked with in the past, when we had a tragedy at work and it only felt right to send this round to the Santiago Handcrew over at Orange County Fire Authority. The donation will be given to the fund directly helping the injured firefighters without fees or middle person hands.
Why is the money going there you ask?
Well as a firefighter for the same department and having come from the handcrew world where I was around two different crew buggy rollovers, this one definitely hits home. Not only were there 12 people involved, some new to our agency and some veterans... they were working on one of our local wild fires here from day one, and were involved in a very unfortunate traffic accident causing the crew buggy to roll over at highway speeds. Some with minor injuries, some with major injuries, and still a couple in critical condition with unsure time frames and outcomes. Some also have small children at home some have new babies on the way and some even the kids of fathers who work for us. No one person is more important than the other and we will not compare who needs the money and who doesn't, but it is safe to say that some of them have a more difficult path to their form of normal. Money won't fix what has happened but sure as hell can make things easier on the families. This money is going to directly support the long road ahead for the injured crew members and their families. No extra hands, no fees, straight to the cause.
Luckily, I am not in this alone...
When I said I was in touch with a few pals, I wasn't kidding. First person I thought of was Amanda who we know as the kind soul who runs The Eric Marsh Foundation. She knows all about the negatives this wild career can bring as she is the widow of Superintendent Eric Marsh of the Granite Mountain Hotshots. I have worked on a few things with Amanda, and the Eric Marsh Foundation along with having some conversations with Brendan McDonough over the years. Amanda was quick to respond and happy to contribute to the project. We knew we were going to work on something together and when this tragedy hit so close to home she was on board with supporting it. The Eric Marsh Foundation will be donating $2500 directly to the fund and adding $20.00 on top of that for every shirt purchased by you kind folks.
Although many many people have expressed interest in t-shirts and stickers, I have a very limited first batch as I was unsure the support I would draw up in this little project and up to this point I have only handed stickers out to those who have shared a beer in camp, around a fire, or in passing on the road. This will be the first time I am selling or shipping anything and will be done so in an extremely small amount to keep it special. Will there be more? If you guys want 'em. Different color scheme? If you guys desire 'em. Different donation destination? Depends who needs it.
